Harvest | of Love

It is harvest time in the Northern Hemisphere, and celebrations of gratitude are occurring in some cultures. It gives me pause to think, are we cognizant often enough of the seeds we are planting with our words? For indeed, we harvest what we sow.

Words are seeds and they have power. The moment they leave our mouths, we have planted a thought or feeling in someone else. When words are rooted in negativity such as anger, jealousy, spite, or a need for control, they create huge destruction.

Sometimes the destruction is intentional, which creates its own karma back to the person who initiated it. Other times the hurt and destruction are unintentional. We are sometimes simply careless and do not think before we speak.

Particularly with the current turmoil in the world, it’s behooves us to intentionally plant more positive, expansive seeds. Words of love. Words of gratitude. Words that initiate cooperation. Words rooted in grace.

At the end of the day, the world will be the garden that we plant. What will it look like? Will it be a world ravaged by fear, war, greed, jealousy, hate? Or, will it be a world that flourishes in a state of grace? It is up to us to decide.

Today | Your Time & Worth

Today: There are the three powerful little ideas wrapped up in my haiku: Time, thought, and your worth.

Time: Do you fully embrace each day? We know we are mortal (and our ego fears it), but, we still tend to live life as though we have an endless supply of days. You have the choice, right now, to make the most of today. Wring every beautiful moment out of it that you can. Because when it’s over, today is not coming around again. Don’t miss out on anything that you could enjoy, embrace, love, or learn right now. Fully immerse yourself in your life. A movie that drives this idea home brilliantly is About Time. If you haven’t seen it, try to.

Thought: Is your mind consumed with your to-do list the second you wake up? Do your thoughts dwell too often on problems, your personal ones and those of the world? Is there any time today reserved for contemplation, introspection, gratitude for the good things you already have in your life? (Gratitude expands abundance.) And perhaps most importantly, mindful intention to create your ideal life? If not, I strongly urge you to make space for those.

Your worth: Do you even believe that you deserve to have good things come your way? You do. If you don’t believe it, long term you have some internal work to do. But in the meantime, I’ll bet you have at least one champion in your life – you know, a person who believes in you, when you can’t or won’t believe in yourself – that loves you enough to talk you through this. Connect with that person, somehow or some way, even if it’s for just a quick “Hi”. Today, surround yourself with your champions. (And don’t forget to express gratitude and take an interest in their lives too. A balanced life involves mutual exchange.)

Today is all we’ve really got. Please, hear the call, pick up the ball, and run as fast as you can towards your happiness.

Today.

Harmony | With intention, yes, together we might create One beautiful song. | HartHaiku.com

Harmony | Starts with Us

What a wonderful vision, a more harmonious world. Let’s not let go of that. Sometimes it’s discouraging to me though, to see how increasingly divisive the world is becoming. Does it feel that way for you too?

Intention is the key word in this haiku. Without humanity’s intention to create it, more harmony will never happen. Intention requires seeing the other point of view, extending an olive branch, forgiveness and understanding, and cooperation. These seem in short supply in the world at large today. The mandate seems more like “make war to have peace”, and, “see it my way or die”.

What happened to the middle ground? Can we find it? Or is humanity completely lost?

Every group has its own “group think”, be it small or large. Attitudes in large corporations tend to be “top to bottom”. The thinking and the culture is determined by management and filters downward. We see that as a trend in society at large as well.

How about a change to a “bottom to top” model? As individuals we have great power to create positive change with our own thoughts, intentions, and actions. It can begin with us. But, bottom to top will require that we practice autonomous critical thinking, and see beyond the group think. It will also require an intention to use tools that build bridges rather than destroy “the opposition”.

Will we rise to the challenge? Or, will much more need to be destroyed before people wake up and get it?

It’s Time | A New Paradigm

We are programmed in society to believe in duality, that the solutions to problems, the rightness, the truth, must lie within either an A or a B. Two choices, that’s it. They are usually extreme opposites, such as in gender, politics, race, etc. And they are too often pitted against each other.

Albert Einstein defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. And yet we keep hoping to find the answers within the same two A and B extremes.

Let your mind go free. How about a C? Or better yet, a C, D, E, etc – brand new ideas and perspectives outside of A and B. Or at the very least, a new middle ground, a place of cooperation between A and B.

Albert Einstein also said: “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”
